Default PFR rescue mission lots of pictures.

If you havent heard the story from PFR, the Pacific Forest Rally located in Merrit this weekend. Had a couple cars slide off the road during the Recce. A jeep was pulling one of the cars up a hill when it started to slide, bumping the car it was towing and another car off the road.

picture doesnt do it justice, as they always say. But this "ditch" the cars are in is deep and on a steep hill. I can actually barely get started if I stop on it.

thinking

At least it started

Even in the ditch, and weighing as much as a 3/4 ton suburban, had to anchor to a tree.

didnt use this spot, not enough angle

coming

coming

coming

almost out

so, its not out, but I got no more room to winch.
ended up spinning it around downhill by hand and then pushing it out.

thats the other car, they were sandwiched together to start.

this one is right up against a log and a stump. I warned the guy that we would probably have some body dammage from pulling it out. He told me he didnt care, just needed the car out so he could race it tomorrow.

thinking

it starts

ooh, factory tow hook, theres a better one on the other side but I was concerned about rolling the car.

pulling it out almost sideways to reduce body dammage.

checking the integrity of the tow hook, it bent slowly over the course of the pull, stopped using it when the first crack apeared.

so that was the last picture, but again we ran out of room to winch, didnt want to try just pushing the front end around like las time. SO we hooked a strap around the back left wheel, winched it tight, pushed the front around and winched the back foreward until we could drive the car out. This was about 2:30 am, got there about midnight, and still had a hour drive back to merrit. Oh yeah, not a scratch on the car from the recovery. Only dammage we did to the car was the factory tow hook. mind you, he did put the car on its side later that day...

I'm glad the photos turned out! Great sequence - thanks for posting!

I'm sorry to hear your truck was messed up afterwards....definitely not very awesome! Did you get it running? Hopefully not a catastrophic failure? Eric & I were chatting all the way back to Calgary about how much we liked your Suburban - great rally tow/recovery vehicle.

no, the burb is OK

a loose fitting on the oil cooler was spraying oil all over the ABS sensor or something else, i dont 100% know, causing the speedo not to work. Since the speedo wasnt working the truck thought it was stopped and which made the tranny do weird things. Its a good thing the tranny was messing up, 'cause it made me turn around rather than sweeping the last stage. As it was, by the time I got back and turned into Canadian tire, the oil pressure dropped to 0 and there was no more oil in the engine. I am just glad you all still got to race.

See you at Kananaskis, i'll bring the winch, just in case

Cool photos! Thanks for posting!

Question for you: what's the purpose of the jacket draped over the tow cable?

To stop the cable from whipping around and hurting someone should it break while under tension.

But what is all that white stuff?????

Richard in Texas where it finally got cold last night. The low was all the way down to 46F and we had to turn on the heat.

Default More photos, from the daytime

Awesome post, thanks again for all your help in getting us going again so we could run Saturday. We might still be out there if it was up to the towing company....

Here's some photos from the daytime...

If you look closely at the Mitsubishi front bumper you can see the impression from the others exhaust. Dave, you forgot to mention the wrong turn we took on the highway after the tow.

We had a nice tour up to the toll booths before realizing we had gone the wrong way .

But all in all a fun night.
