WASTE MANAGEMENT WINTER RALLY RETURNS FOR FOURTH YEAR

There’s nothing like an adrenaline rush from the sounds of high-power turbo engines and the blinding candlelight of a rally light bar – you’ll get both at the Waste Management Winter Rally! Dress warmly as the weather could range from blustery to a spring tease.

WELLSBORO, Pennsylvania (31 Jan 2015) – The return of regional rally star and defending 2014 Waste Management Winter Rally winner Alvin Fong, along with the enhanced spectator area, have increased interest for the fourth running of the event, which returns Saturday, Feb. 21 to Wellsboro.

Fong and Black Box Rally team have made some changes to the 2006 Mitsubishi Evo 9 and will use the rally to test those modifications.

“Last year we drove a consistent rally that took us to the overall win. The event was very well run so we're back this year to kick off our 2015 season right,” Fong said. “Regardless of rain, snow, or ice, we’re prepared to take this rally flat out!"

The event, part of the Rally America Eastern Championship, is promoted and organized by the Finger Lakes STPR® Motorsports LLC and chaired by Meridith Croucher, from Newark, New York. The organizing committee is unique as it also organizes the Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally, a national stage rally, taking place June 5-6, 2015.The committee consists of two groups, one based out of Wellsboro and the other from Rochester, New York.

The rally course consists of dirt and gravel roads all on property owned and provided for use by Waste Management.

Croucher noted unlike other types of racing, the Waste Management Winter Rally offers activities for all types of fans and everyone in the family. An added bonus is this year’s spectator area, which was opened for last summer’s STPR and includes a high-speed jump.

“This has become a very popular family event, where kids can get up close to the rally cars, meet the drivers, enjoy some refreshments, and then watch the cars battle on a closed course,” she said. “The competitors consider this a fun event so spectators will see moves that would not be done at STPR.”

There is ample parking available that is close to the viewing area. There will be an entry fee into the spectator area of $5 per person. The amenities will be minimal, but there will be food vendors on site. Dress warmly! Parking is close enough spectators can easily return to their cars for a quick warm-up between sessions.

The action begins about noon and goes until after sunset. The rally consists of five stages, and fans get to see the cars going in both directions. The evening stage guarantees some quality twilight action.

What is Performance Rally?

In the United States, performance rally teams have driver and co-driver (or navigator) for each car, and the competitors race in segments (or stages) mostly on closed public roads, trying to get from the beginning to the end of the stage as fast as they can. Unlike other forms of motorsports, there is no practice allowed, and teams are only allowed one pass to review the course at the public speed limit before the event. In competition, the navigator then barks out the route instructions while the drive proceeds, sometimes at speeds exceeding 100 miles-per-hour, through forest, desert, and logging around at events around the country. The cars, all street legal to allow driving on public roads between racing stages, are compact and sub-compact cars with varying amounts of performance modifications depending on the class they are running in. The sight of these cars, running at speed through the woods to beat the clock, makes exciting spectating for the fans who come out to watch performance rally.
