\r\n Default Rally Update, 100 Acre Wood Rally\r\n

    \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n
    \r\n
    \r\n
\r\n I have been slow with updating the build but It is now done and the car has finished the 100 Acre Wood Regional Rally.
\r\nWe did have some issues with a strut coming apart and this slowed us but we pressed on to the finish.
\r\nThe 034 parts did great, the IIb fuel injection system worked great. We are looking forward to more racing.
    \r\nEnjoy the pictures.

\r\n Southern Ohio Forest Rally Update:
\nThe event went very well for us. Car did great and we survived the roads and the heat in the car the first day.
\nOnly real issue was a rear axle nut coming loose at the first service and a CV joint that was also coming loose, both were tightened at service and checked the rest of the weekend.
\nAlso had a little run in with fence post during the very wet and muddy head to head super special. See the pictures for the dent.
\nThe super special was fun. We raced head to head with the Audi 90 of Johansen and Little. They ended up getting 3rd in the national rally standing, I am not sure how long it has been since an Audi has been in the top three but I am sure it is has been many years.
    \n
\nResults for Friday Regional Rally 16th overall and 7th in the Open Light Class (46 regional cars)
\nSaturday Regional Rally Results 15th overall and 6th in the Open Light Class.
\nFor the National Standings of the two days we were 18th overall and 4th in class (62 cars started), one place off the podium.
\nThe roads were very tight and had a lot of tight corners with drops on the outside. We were happy with our speed and look forward to doing this event again.
    \n
    \nEnjoy the pictures and videos.
    \n
\nStayed at the Ravenwood Castle, Very nice place and close to the first day service.

\r\n Mickey Thompson Mini Mag tires designed in 1968. None of the car (except the faulty ignition module and safety equipment) was later than 1971 tech. The tires were about as far from snow tires as you could get.
    \n
\nAnd before anyone chides us on the tire choice, I\'ll quote the RA rules for Historic class.

    \r\n

    \r\n
    \r\n \r\n 11.1. PRINCIPLES
\nThe purpose of Historic Class is to “enable the active celebration of the
\nHistory of the Motor Car” in stage rallying in America. The Historic Class
\nrules are intended to “preserve the specification of (the) period and prevent
\nthe modifications of performance and behaviour which could arise through
\nthe application of modern technology.” Furthermore, “Historic competition is
\nnot simply another formula in which to acquire trophies, it is a discipline
\napart, in which one of the essential ingredients is devotion to the cars and to
    \ntheir history.”

    \r\n
\r\nTire Rack does not carry them (so there is no comparison test). There are better tires out there (Google is your friend), but if you must (kinda/sorta) be period "correct"......
    \r\n
\r\nWe did run Weather-Masters back in the day. And the first hydrophylics were some specially compounded Sportmasters, as I recall (and were unobtaniums for most of us).

And if you read down from the quoted paragraph, you will find that one of the four preparation rules for the class is 11.3.A.2. Wheels and tires are free.

\r\n Any reason you wouldn\'t run 1985 or older tech, why 1971? I run an H sticker as well, though I think it\'s technically a dead over class according to RA. I run old lights and an "older" terratrip 202, motor/ Trans is mid late 80\'s, most everything else is junkyard GM. That weekend, snow tires were most certainly a safety item.

\nCrap never mind, we\'re not talking Audi; we\'re talking insane sewing machine. That thing did permanent damage to my hearing when you whipped by while we were vacationing on the side of 11. \r\n

I\'ve gotten into arguments with old-guard SCCA rallyists over that. They INSIST "H" is in addition to your regular class. The Rally America rulebooks says otherwise, but they don\'t want to read. They "know" it.

\r\n I\'m with ya, at our first "major" rally, 100 AW 2012, after the repaint, I wanted to run H and was curtly told by a paid member of the RA staff that she might have some stickers around somewhere but it wasn\'t really a class and I would need G5\'s. I told her I\'d just as soon have the Hs anyway.
    \n
\nIf you look at it, there are more H eligible cars running the rallies around us than there are G5s \r\n

It was Rob Wright that inspected the cage, just like Mark thought.
\r\nJust contact him and arrange a date, time and location for the inspection.
\r\nHe is a very good guy and easy to deal with.
    \r\n
\r\nHope your build is going well and that we will see you on stage in the future.\r\n

\nWhat Jeff wanted from the car was a period build. And he wanted to strictly adhere to the period. The fact that it could also be a Historic class entry was a bonus.\r\n

\r\n I found that when I was sitting with Mike Whitman is his 510 and trying to read the mechanical Halda a few years ago, that the numbers had gotten smaller (and harder to read) through time.....
    \r\n
\r\n(Kinda like drivers suits do, also)
    \r\n
\r\nSince then, I have had cataract surgery. Does that mean I am no longer period eligible by your standards?

\nDon\'t know why vintage damers for such a great car as the mighty 2 stroke should be hard to find.
\nI just walk over to the shelf..
\nAnd if I need more, one phone call away..
    \n
\nAnd tires, I thought you guy was set using those monster huge nowhere near period correct tractor tires which are 4 inches too tall and 3 too wide?\r\n

\r\n John, for the SAAB, the dampers aren\'t hard to find. But for other vintage cars, they sometimes are.
    \n
\nOn the tires, they are period. They aren\'t period for rally. They are too tall. If they were three inches narrower they would be 1" wide. But, that is the tire that will stay on the car. Jeff has done a good job of ignoring a lot of people on this car. People that said a late two-stroke wouldn\'t fit in the bullnose. People that said that the Porsche carb wouldn\'t work or that we couldn\'t get a legal FIA cookbook cage in the car. I suggested a lot of different tires, he wanted tall and skinny. And black wheels too.\r\n

Not too argue but that\'s the whole problem with this play "vintage\' stuff. No 2 stroke in rally would have ever used a tire like that. A 155 x 15 mud and snow was what was used on the 2 strokes.. That thing is FAT and at 27" its nearly 4" taller than was used in the vital "time period ON A SAAB"...
    \n
\nYou\'ve said the guy decided, but I know the tire is not "in the spirit" of the times, its rediculous in fact..
    \n
\nIf guys want to play "Vintage" or "Historic" then do it.......the 850 into a shortnose, fine. tripple IDA, fine they were around. Hell i suggested that to guys a hunderd years ago along with reedvalves. (I am really a 2 stroke guy in my heart of hearts 1967-1984 worked and rode \'em constantly)
    \n
    \nNobody sees that..
    \n
\nBut who decides if it should be allowed when it was never used?\r\n

\r\n John, similar tall and skinny street tires were used in the \'60s. Jeff has a photo archive of them. In the \'70s, they switched to shorter tires. Those are in the photo archive also.\r\n

\r\n With all due respect to Jeff\'s right to do what he wants with his car, the only SAAB I ever saw with tires that big were the factory Baja cars. Erik Carlsson\'s cars appear to have had smaller tires. See the photos below.
    \n
\nThe fully-studded tires we used in the 1969 and 1971 Canadian Winter were not that size, especially in cross section.
    \n
\nAnd, for some strange reason, I still have one tire down in the barn from our 1970 POR car. It\'s a 165-15 Michelin snow tire. (The old US designation was 5.60-15.) That\'s what everyone ran back then.
    \n
\nThat said, Jeff is wise to ignore so-called experts on the internet who have no hands-on experience of the time period.

\nThey don\'t mention that all the teams gave the crew British Gold Guineas as "ready cash" since the locals liked Gold and knew what Guineas were. (21 shillings to you who don\'t know-' + '-' + '-One Pound Sterling was 20 shillings... )
\nCarlson said when he was stuck some local guys "materialized" from the bush and it was only cause he had the gold guineas that they popped it out where they were stuck high centered over onto "good clean mud" and off they went...
    \n
\nSafari is not "normal rally", or was not....in any way, car prep, team prep, service, anything.\r\n

Default 1985 Audi 4000 Quattro Rally Car Build

Here are some pictures of our Open Light Audi 4kq rally car build.

We have stripped the car and the cage is being built.

We are shooting to be ready for the 2012 100 acre wood rally.
