\r\n Default What is happening with the Fiesta cup thing?\r\n

\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n There has been virtually no mention of this (I would assume due to the slow uptake of R2 Fiesta\'s in North America).
\r\n
\r\nWhat\'s the verdict? Where did the series go? Will it continue into next year? What about running in Rally GB?
\r\n
\r\nDoes anyone have any new links or info to share? Costs, how the cars are, etc?\r\n

\r\n I can tell you that I\'ve had a ride in a full R2 Fiesta and if you keep it \'on step\' it is very quick.
\nSmooth driving and clean lines are heavily rewarded.
\nDuplessis was able to run pedal it to about 3.5 sec/K beind Antoine at NEFR. Lots of variables in that comparison ... ~2 sec/k off Antoine\'s pace on Concord Pond.

\r\n Mr. Duplessis was VERY quick at both STPR and NEFR in the R2! Watch any video and you come away amazed! I can only speak from a worker/speccie\'s viewpoint, but the amount of speed he carries into and through corners boggles the mind. An experienced photographer on Concord Pond at NEFR commented that "Chris makes shooting rally easy" -' + '- and then showed me this amazing sequence of photos from the off-camber, inside corner boulder yump at mile 4.56 -' + '- STUNNING. Of course, his run at 2010 SnoDrift, where just standing on the icy roads was sometimes daunting, pretty much hints at his level of talent.\r\n

I think one of the best examples of Duplessis\' speed came from Mt Washington. Out of all the rally cars, both AWD and 2WD, N/A and turbo, Chris was second fastest. The only rally car faster than him was an Evo X driven by Martai, and even then the difference was less than 4 seconds. Chris beat Cassidy\'s STi by 9 seconds and Kearney\'s by 15. All that with a scant 170 hp. The man can drive.\r\n

    Fixed it for you.
    \n
\nOne thing about the R2 is that it is a fully engineered package that has been put together by a \'Factory\' effort, with the clubman in mind. You get a very reliable package that works together and works right out of the box with zero development time.
    \n
\nYou still need to know how to drive... cars might help you win an event but rarely win championships.\r\n

\r\n To the OP, last I heard the series was delayed because Ford realized nobody had an R2 built in time for the STPR start, with the exception of Chris. And even though the FiestaR2 page labeled 4 Fiestas as "R2", truely Chris\' was the only one that was (they had Petrow, Mei, DVW listed as R2 when DVW is turbo and Petrow/Mei\'s are basically a MS1)\r\n

\r\n knowing that C.Duplessis is a great driver, I would still say the R2 is amazing based upon his performance. While Chris was fast in his Scion XD Ride, he\'s even faster in the R2, seemingly impossibly faster. so it must be a fantastic setup

knowing that C.Duplessis is a great driver, I would still say the R2 is amazing based upon his performance. While Chris was fast in his Scion XD Ride, he\'s even faster in the R2, seemingly impossibly faster. so it must be a fantastic setup

\r\nwhat\'s the weight / hp on that thing?
    \r\nanyone have a gearing / mph / rpm chart for it ?

\r\nI can see now that I got carried away describing what Chris is doing! I never intended to imply that the R2 package was not a capable and quick platform, sorry if I made it sound like that.

I am curious if someone has actually seen Chris\' Fiesta weighed during a gravel rally full of fuel, spare tire, toolkit, jack, spill kit, fire extinguishers, odometer, intercom, etc. The US manual hatchback weighs 2,537 and although the (mostly plastic) interior is removed, along with airbags, AC and other small items, the addition of cage, larger brakes, gravel wheels and heavy tires, skidplates, etc puts back on the car serious weight.

I\'d guess that as a bare minimum spec with no spares/tools/etc. M-Sport said they worked to get down to the minimum weight for the R2, but no details are said what that weight includes or doesn\'t.

\r\nFrom what I saw in the video below and another online, calculating gears from speed... Gearing seems to be in line with a top speed in 5th of just over 100mph.

Ask Mike Hurst. He was weighing cars after they finished SS4 Icicle Brook North at NEFR. (I don\'t know who exactly he weighed, I was busy running the FTC, I just know he was doing it.)

    \r\n Hi,
    \r\n
\r\nI recently started a thread about the the Fiesta MS1. I haven\'t done much research regarding two lower spec Fiesta\'s in the US, but Ford has now obviously basically created a works R1 package. I\'m sure that it will be slower than the R2, but it\'s also considerably cheaper.
    \r\n
\r\nI didn\'t get many responses in my thread, so maybe I will here. What does the rally community think? Would that be a possibility?
    \r\n
\r\nJeremy . . . would you consider something like that? If so, why? If not, why?

\r\n I can tell you from NEFR that the stock fiesta Billy Petrow and were in, the things are an absolute blast. The car had a cage, skidplate and stock suspension on Friday and we put on Bilsteins for Saturday. But Billy\'s car will keep evolving and getting closer and closer to a full R2.
    \n
\nWe competed the last two years in AWD WRX\'s and I was expecting the major step down in grip and power to make the event a little bit of a yawn, but it wasn\'t. The low weight, quick responsive steering and the great rewards for carrying momentum through a turn were awesome.
    \n
\nThe biggest issue we had was the stock gear spacing, 2-3 is really far apart and if Billy didn\'t nail a turn in the right gear we were super bogged down (especially on an uphill). Also the absolute speed isn\'t there. NEFR has some long links of 6\'s and we were peddle to the floor but just not picking up much speed. The linked 3s and 4s on Saturday were an absolute blast.
    \n
    \n
    \n
\nI for one can\'t wait until next year, should be awesome.
    \n
\nTo me this car is instantly the "what you should start with" car, forget rusted crap can GTIs from the 80\'s. It\'s solid, reliable, realistically cheap, rally ready parts are available from M-sport and are engineered well (and there\'s always more to buy if you want to) and its a blast to drive or ride in. Oh, and there\'s a hell of a lot more room in it then the GC Impreza we had last.

The Fiesta looks like a great little package in any spec (stock to R2 to Super Turbo crazy DVW). The big hurdle is the cost for most privateer teams. Building the car to R2 spec looks to be 60-80K before you hit your first stage mile.
    \n
\nBuying the street/starter car from the dealer costs more than most used/new rally ready 2wd cars, and by the time you build/prep the fiesta with cage and safety gear (~$25-30K total in build/car) you could have run a season or more in a 2wd car (including initial build/purchase) with the $$.
    \n
\nMaybe we will start seeing fiesta shells in junkyards that are salvageable, but 15+K for a "shell" is a lot of money for most teams. Even better would be some used R2 cars floating around cheap! Until the price and availability of used/crashed street cars/rally cars comes down you can get a lot more bang for the buck running a wide variety of lower spec (than R2) 2wd platforms.

Billy certainly doesn\'t have $25-30K in his car. I agree that an R2 isn\'t a starter car for a privateer with limited funds, and $80K is about right for a full build, but when you can part and piece a car with quality parts all the way up to the R2 without reinventing the wheel its pretty nice.
    \n
\nDoes buying a new shell ever cost less then buying a 20yo shell, no. But after NEFR if someone where to ask me if they should drop $10K on a 5-10yo WRX or $13K brand new Fiesta, I\'d say the fiesta. The prices for everything else is about the same no matter what the car.

The M-sport engineering is certainly nice, even in stock form the Fiestas are a blast to drive. My point is that the price for even a base level rally car (petrow\'s, Verena\'s) for a privateer does not make much sense from a $/stage mile (or my favorite: smiles/mile) for a season of competition. Someone just starting out could do a lot better to save their money go to rally school, run a clapped out 2wd for a season for experience and learning and then move up into a more modern car or platform if they see the need/desire.
    \r\n
\r\nI would bet a 5 cases of guiness in cans that to build a Fiesta similar to Petrow\'s (stock with basic rally stuff and the m-sport cage) would be $25K+ if you are starting from scratch: buy the cage kit at advertised price and pay to have someone m-sport approved to install the cage....It is a lot cheaper to build a car when you have seats, belts, intercom, odo, etc laying around from previous cars etc....
    \r\n
    \r\n
\r\nI\'d love to see the R2 series take off here: Cool well built reliable and reasonably cheap to run cars, potential for great competition. Without competitors building or buying R2s and running though the series can\'t work.....as we saw in 2011! What will it take to get some folks into these cars? My guess is that the high price tag for cars and the uncertainty of the series taking off (here) is what has kept anyone (other than team O/ford connection) from building one to run in the US...
    \r\n
\r\nThat said if someone is looking to plunk down 80K for a 2wd rally car to have a lot of smiles/mile in, the first car I would suggest is a R2 Fiesta!
    \r\n

The cage gets purchased from M-sport (through Tim O) installed by one of handfull of people in N.A. that Malcolm has signed off on, pics and paperwork get sent to M-sport and the FIA paperwork comes back.

I think what is being asked is if the 4 door Fiesta is homologated properly in order to fit into the FIA system where normally 2 door Fiesta\'s would go.
    \r\n
\r\nFor instance, say you entered the WRC round of Mexico in an actual FIA class; would the car have a class to actually compete in? Or is it a bastardized NA model, just like the rest of our cars \r\n

    \n
\nFor instance, say you entered the WRC round of Mexico in an actual FIA class; would the car have a class to actually compete in? Or is it a bastardized NA model, just like the rest of our cars

My understanding is that the only hangup (as mentioned) was the cage, and that has been taken care of. Apparently a 5-door R2 (like Chris\'s) would be legal for global competition.

\r\n Well its not cheap, but looking at WRC Finland the top Fiesta R2 right now is running about 5.2 seconds slower / stage mile than Loeb (at a fraction of the cost???) 60-80K vs what ever a Citreon DS3 WRC car costs....\r\n

\r\n If only Ford bought all of the extra parts back from the R2 program. Seats, Airbags, trim, and wheel buybacks could shave a few $$$$ off of an R2.\r\n

\r\n I will add in that from what i know the series is still under development and getting closer to being a settled deal than it was this year.
    \n
\nWE have quite a few cars in the mix right now that could be running in the FST...
    \nPetrow
    \nMei
    \nDuplesis
    \nKnox
    \nMenegaz
    \n
\nThat\'s 5 cars/drivers that are planning on running FST even if it is with an MS1 spec\'d car. I am sure that more will start to surface before the start of next season and we might find ourselves with 5 R2 cars for the start of next season.
    \n
    \nOn how the car drove:
\nThe car is amazing fun! never thought that i would be saying that about a 2wd car coming from being on the overall podium at events with our Impreza\'s the last 2 years. The car is so easy to drive, so predictable and just out right nasty when you put your foot to the floor and trust in your notes.
    \n
\nI can\'t imagine how the car will be with an full R2 kit on it after having so much fun in an MS1 spec\'d car!!!
    \n
\nThis Fiesta will become the next "GTi" for rally\'ers in North America!\r\n

Hey now, while I see you are excited, the Swift GT didn\'t exactly become the next "GTi" in NA rallying even though a 10 spec car series did happen
    \r\n
\r\nOk, this MS1 thing is pretty cool though (I didn\'t realize there was a kit level below the R2); after further review of the sales document and brochure (which lists prices in pounds), this could definitely be the way to go. I might have to look at selling the STi and financing a base model Fiesta soon...\r\n

    \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n
    \r\n
    \r\n
\r\n Here\'s a "basic" build price. I\'m probably missing some stuff, so people can add to the list. Sure you can get more/less on each but it\'s a rough estimate:
    \r\n
    \r\n$2500-$3500 cage
\r\n$700 x 2 for seats (I think OMP is the cheapest at $700 a piece with head wings)
\r\n$400 for a pair of harnesses
    \r\n$100 for extinguishers/triangles/first-aid kit
    \r\n$300-$600 for underbody protection
    \r\n$260 for a Peltor
\r\n$70 for a brake line limiter
    \r\n$100 for misc fuel/brake lines
    \r\n$100 for braided stainless lines
    \r\n$400 for brake pads
    \r\n$30 hood pins
    \r\n$30 map light
    \r\n$400 4x Hella lights.
    \r\n
\r\nSo you\'re at ~$6000-$7000 in BASIC parts that you can add to any car. You\'ll still need to add a suspension to the mix, but you can look at spending anywhere from $1500 to $15,000+ for that. Don\'t forget wheels and tires.
    \r\n
\r\nSo, as Jeremy said, you\'re looking at $10k and your base price on a Fiesta to be stage ready. $15k for the fiesta + tax/delivery and you\'re around $27k.\r\n

..........Which is about $12K US. so now you have $27K+ in a car/parts that needs tires (more wheels) and a few bits and bobbins, *assembly* and cage install to make it to its first stage mile. Not a great deal for the "spec" of the MS1 when similar performance rally car can be built out of a variety of other platforms for a fraction (thinking it is possible to be 1/3rd or less the cost; easily @ 1/2 the budget). When we start seeing fiestas used and/or salvage-able for less than 5K then the platform will start to make sense for grassroots/privateer rallyists.

What is the difference between rallying a $25k car that you\'ve purchased outright vs a $25k car you are making payments on? Either way, you crash it, you are out $25k one way or the other.\r\n

\r\n The biggest difference is having 25K up front.
\r\nIf you have $25k up front you likely either have much more than that from either being successful or from your family being successful and $25k is not that big of a deal or you\'ve been saving to buy a house for three years before your wife slept with your neighbor and that was your settlement from the divorce and you\'re done trying to live the American Dream and you\'re going to go rallying and be the next Ken Block, in which case you go buy a brand new Impreza.
\r\nI\'ve spent well over $25k building my rally car. Majority of it was at a rate of about $1000 per month during the year or so of working 80 hours per week and two jobs so I could buy cool rally parts. It\'ll probably be a $40k rally car that I can sell for $10k once it gets back on stage. The big difference is that the spare shell was free and clean and so when I do wreck the car, I just swap all the good stuff over to the new car. If it burns to the ground and nothing is reusable, I\'m done.
\r\nWe\'ve discussed rally-able platforms a few times. The Hyundai Accent and Chevy Aveo from 2002-2004 are quite attractive in that you can find a decent base model for around $1-2k. Lots would need developed (brakes, control arms, uprights with non-skateboard bearings, etc) though to make one of those competitive with a R2 and they are still driven from the incorrect end for smiles/mile delivery maximization.
\r\nFord never publicly said much on what their promotional plan for the series was going to be. I have a two car proposal all ready to go but am not going to execute the effort to achieve the plan without knowing how much Ford is putting into it from a media standpoint. Glad I decided to wait given their \'promotion\' of it after the first two events of the Cup.\r\n

Yeah, no doubt a good and sorted package. However, the only thing on that kit that\'s really "fitted" for the car is the suspension. The rest of the parts you could source for cheaper considering it\'s just changing stock pads/shoes, etc.
    \r\n
\r\nMaybe the real thing is that Ford needs to work back a "Spec Fiesta" which is pretty much the R1 kit. Still allows payouts, maybe throw in a championship.
    \r\n
\r\nI do see that eventually I will be doing 2WD in a Fiesta, just needs to be a time when there is good aftermarket support and cheap bodies that makes sense to move away from my Honda.\r\n

\r\n I had one of my Formula Fords financed on an unsecured personal loan for 3 years once. Loan guy at the bank didn\'t believe me when I told him what I wanted the money for.
\r\n I\'m sure there are plenty of rally/race cars being paid for with auto financing, and the race season paid for with a line of credit today.

\r\n There are 7 fiestas on Copart right now. This is how I got my cars. I bought 3 to make 2 good ones. One for rally one to sell to help pay for the Rally car. The other car I parted to fix the other 2 cars and sold the rest of the parts on ebay. You can almost be into the rally car for free if you dont count your time and labor for dealing with 3 cars. Remember your also not dealing with rust and wore out parts with a newer car.

\n I also financed my first oval track car. 10k it was like $200.00 a month. I raced that car 3 years then wrecked it and still paid for 2 more years. I only complained once a month about still owing on a wrecked car.\r\n

\r\n A buddy of mine was making bike payments for like 2-3 years on some new cool street bike. but it had gotten stolen from him after 3 months. no gap / theft insurance. it was pay or bad credit. he paid. eventually the finance company cut him a break and i think dropped his last 6 payments. shit happens, we all have to take a turn.\r\n

Default What is happening with the Fiesta cup thing?

There has been virtually no mention of this (I would assume due to the slow uptake of R2 Fiesta's in North America).

What's the verdict? Where did the series go? Will it continue into next year? What about running in Rally GB?

Does anyone have any new links or info to share? Costs, how the cars are, etc?

Blew up the clutch at PFR, back at it for Big White!
