What is the difference between rallying a $25k car that you\'ve purchased outright vs a $25k car you are making payments on? Either way, you crash it, you are out $25k one way or the other.\r\n

\r\n The biggest difference is having 25K up front.
\r\nIf you have $25k up front you likely either have much more than that from either being successful or from your family being successful and $25k is not that big of a deal or you\'ve been saving to buy a house for three years before your wife slept with your neighbor and that was your settlement from the divorce and you\'re done trying to live the American Dream and you\'re going to go rallying and be the next Ken Block, in which case you go buy a brand new Impreza.
\r\nI\'ve spent well over $25k building my rally car. Majority of it was at a rate of about $1000 per month during the year or so of working 80 hours per week and two jobs so I could buy cool rally parts. It\'ll probably be a $40k rally car that I can sell for $10k once it gets back on stage. The big difference is that the spare shell was free and clean and so when I do wreck the car, I just swap all the good stuff over to the new car. If it burns to the ground and nothing is reusable, I\'m done.
\r\nWe\'ve discussed rally-able platforms a few times. The Hyundai Accent and Chevy Aveo from 2002-2004 are quite attractive in that you can find a decent base model for around $1-2k. Lots would need developed (brakes, control arms, uprights with non-skateboard bearings, etc) though to make one of those competitive with a R2 and they are still driven from the incorrect end for smiles/mile delivery maximization.
\r\nFord never publicly said much on what their promotional plan for the series was going to be. I have a two car proposal all ready to go but am not going to execute the effort to achieve the plan without knowing how much Ford is putting into it from a media standpoint. Glad I decided to wait given their \'promotion\' of it after the first two events of the Cup.\r\n

Or you could just get the MS1 kit that was engineered and put together by M-sport instead of having to find and piece everything together.
    \r\n
\r\nYou can see the full price list and available options here: http://www.fiestams1.com/index.php/c...startdown/106/
    \r\n
\r\nMS1 kit comes with the following:
\r\nThe Fiesta MS1 conversion kit compromises of Roll Cage Kit, Bonnet
\r\n& Boot Pin Kit, Exhaust Rear Silencer, Engine and Gearbox Mount
\r\nSupport Kit, Sparco Steering Wheel and Fitting Kit, Uprated Brake
\r\nPads, Braided Brake Pipe Kit, Uprated Damper Kit with Eibach
\r\nsprings, front and rear. Basic Auxiliary wiring loom kit, Fuel
\r\nAncillary Kit (Rollover Valve, Fuel Pipes and fittings), Interior Panel
\r\nKit (Door panels and inner rear ¼ panels and fittings), Competition
\r\nSeats and 6pt Q/R Harness Kit, Plumbed In and Hand Held Fire
\r\nExtinguisher System, Spare Wheel Ratchet Strap Kit, Co-Driver
\r\nFootrest Kit, Protection Kit (Tank Guard & Fuel Filler Protection),
    \r\n6mm Sumpguard Kit, 4 x OZ 6.5” x 15” Wheels.
    \r\n
\r\nAll of that for 7500 GBP and you would only need First Aid Kit, Spill Kit, and tires to run.
    \r\n \r\n
    \r\n
    \r\n
Yeah, no doubt a good and sorted package. However, the only thing on that kit that\'s really "fitted" for the car is the suspension. The rest of the parts you could source for cheaper considering it\'s just changing stock pads/shoes, etc.
    \r\n
\r\nMaybe the real thing is that Ford needs to work back a "Spec Fiesta" which is pretty much the R1 kit. Still allows payouts, maybe throw in a championship.
    \r\n
\r\nI do see that eventually I will be doing 2WD in a Fiesta, just needs to be a time when there is good aftermarket support and cheap bodies that makes sense to move away from my Honda.\r\n

\r\n I had one of my Formula Fords financed on an unsecured personal loan for 3 years once. Loan guy at the bank didn\'t believe me when I told him what I wanted the money for.
\r\n I\'m sure there are plenty of rally/race cars being paid for with auto financing, and the race season paid for with a line of credit today.

\r\n There are 7 fiestas on Copart right now. This is how I got my cars. I bought 3 to make 2 good ones. One for rally one to sell to help pay for the Rally car. The other car I parted to fix the other 2 cars and sold the rest of the parts on ebay. You can almost be into the rally car for free if you dont count your time and labor for dealing with 3 cars. Remember your also not dealing with rust and wore out parts with a newer car.
    \n
\n I also financed my first oval track car. 10k it was like $200.00 a month. I raced that car 3 years then wrecked it and still paid for 2 more years. I only complained once a month about still owing on a wrecked car.\r\n

\r\n A buddy of mine was making bike payments for like 2-3 years on some new cool street bike. but it had gotten stolen from him after 3 months. no gap / theft insurance. it was pay or bad credit. he paid. eventually the finance company cut him a break and i think dropped his last 6 payments. shit happens, we all have to take a turn.\r\n

\r\n What do you do about the required full coverage insurance needed for a car loan? I guess you show the agent the car before you strip it, but man, you\'ll have some explaining to do if something odd happens...\r\n

\r\n Is there any news on the Ecoboost, turbo 1.6L showing up in North America?

\r\nThe way it sits right now^,I think the Mini sponsored team with the club racer or track series car will be the fastest. If there was a turbo version available I\'d have good look at trying to put a car together for it.But the 170HP and the gearing/top speed would be pretty slow.\r\n

\nWho is showing anyone their car to buy street car insurance? I think the idea is you eat the payments and don\'t make an insurance claim on a vehicle used for racing which would null and void street car insurance anyway.\r\n

Well YMMV of course, in my experience, but just liablity insurance= no look over/ all phone or online. Full coverage = take it to the agent, even took pictures. I see the agents point; How else would they know that the cars not a crumbled up mess, massive hail damage etc. and you (NOT RALLY CAR, MIND YOU) then wait 6 months and file a big claim?
    \r\n
\r\nI just had this nightmare flash through my head. Buy a car on payments. Get full coverage. Build Rally car. Tree falls on house. Agent comes out to look at roof, sees rallycar and goes all #$!@^$%^#%$%&$%#$^%!!!!!!!\r\n

Well wouldn\'t you feel like a dumbass for not covering your ass then You\'re really stretching here though, to the point this is a non-issue. Buy the car, insure it, then build it. If you are dumb enough to show your agent/file any sort of claim, well, that falls into the dumbass category as well.
    \r\n
\r\nNow, I think the better question is ehat would they do liabilty wise if you ran into something/someone. As far as I can tell, everyone in Alberta is lying to their insurance companies lol.\r\n

\r\n I\'ve spotted several ecoboost Fiestas driving around the Detroit area. They\'re putting the miles on them.

\r\n I had to meet my progressive insurance Agent about repairs to my street car that were not done correctly. I showed up in my caged rally car. My Agent commented about it, something about how it must be hard to get in and out with the roll cage. i just said something like you get used to it.
    \n
\nShe gave me a rather disinterested look like "OK, whatever, lets just deal with your car in the shop so i can get on with my day"
    \n
\nI think most policies are written in a way where they can\'t void/ or alter your policy based upon what you do at a race track, or rented out closed road. but they also don\'t cover you if you are at a race track and or any timed competition . each company is a bit different.
    \n
\nI did ask the agent if i crashed too much if progressive would drop me, and she said progressive doesn\'t drop anyone, they just charge you more, if you are willing to pay they are willing to insure.\r\n

\r\n Clearly Billy has worked through much/all/some of the M-sport website and taken the plunge.
    \n
\nI\'d still be on the fence simply because I don\'t see information online about what the parts spec actually is, and other important information. To get anyone to buy seems to require a bit of handholding to get through the process.
    \n
\nThat\'s the biggest downfall- they\'re close to offering a near turnkey product, but don\'t really market that in such a way that a browsing customer can figure out what that product is without committing to a long winded exchange via email or the telephone.
    \n
\nIn my case, it sort of kills the dream and back of the mind planning that sometimes happens when a person sees something nifty and thinks "boy, that\'d be cool, how do I get it?"\r\n

\r\n IMO Mazda2 is your best bang for the buck car to run if you\'re looking at just something like an MS1. Less restriction on contingency money for a similar performing car. Can accept R2 suspension bits easily. Motor/Gearbox needs other work.
    \n
\nNow... if you\'re looking at doing an R2, or pulling from the Msport parts bin for motor/trans, the Fiesta is the way to go.
    \n
\nBut Ford/Mazda + MaxAttack! is your way to go for 2WD.\r\n

\r\n Msport has the 4.6 Final from the 4.25 OEM final drive, which isn\'t bad if you\'re shifting at 6k redline. But don\'t these motors pull up to a 7k limiter?
    \r\n
\r\nMaybe Bill can chime in on what the stock motor runs at and OEM shift drops are. But I think a 4.6 final would be pretty good improvement over the OEM final.
    \r\n
\r\nIt\'s just a matter of getting some power from the motor at that point. Doing an R2 motor build won\'t make sense since it comes with an 8500rpm limiter once you change the pistons/rods/valve springs/cams and the OEM trans will be terrible for that power band.
    \r\n
\r\nGoing with a turbo kit on an OEM motor seems your best option, as long as you\'re within the limits of the trans\' torque output. Don\'t have to go for Van Way power, but I think the trans and motor should be able to handle something reasonably close to 170hp at the crank with a turbo kit. Cams/valves/etc = lots of R&D to produce. Turbos can be custom built and run on stock motors by just about anyone if the do the research and have some fab up a turbo manifold and put on an ECU tune.
    \r\n
\r\nThere\'s also the FSwerks guys who will be doing parts for the Fiesta. They have an intake/exhaust that they were working on. Stock power was 108.5whp & 101.1wtq,
\r\nAdding Intake & exhaust increased it to 117.8whp & 106.5wtq with no engine mapping. Which is ~10hp at the crank.\r\n

\r\n So, considering it is a new season, bringing this thread back from the dead:
    \n
\nWho is competing in Fiesta\'s this year? What spec are you running the car at (R1, MS1, R2)? Are you happy with your decision to run the Fiesta? What sort of costs did you end up with?
    \n
\nI\'m curious about this "bilstein" suspension M-Sport mentions as entry level suspension. Now, obviously it\'s not hard to swap suspension pieces and it seems awfully expensive for what it is.
    \n
    \nEdit-
\nYou also have to consider that you can go WAY cheaper on certain parts when building an "R1" or "MS1" style car if you are eventually considering going R2 as some of the parts simply don\'t crossover and have to be replaced anyways. Like I said, suspension-wise, you can go with hundreds of different options. Same with the LSD for the 5 speed box, you can get a plate LSD for $1200 vs $2800 for the MS1 lsd. All of that costs savings adds up. To finance a Fiesta is around $250/month in Alberta, not a bad deal at all. You\'d think there would be a ton of used ones, but good luck finding a manual!\r\n

\r\n ^^^^ i think rally mainly is about suspension and tires. So i would leave the Reiger in it, even though it is very expensive compare to the entry level Bilstein.
\ni think you almost will ruin the car without reiger.
\nMy wife has a fiesta , but it is a bone stock daily driver. I have to admit i like to drive it around , and i am 6.1 or 6.2 deppending on my mood ... LOL
\nThe R2 kit seeems a very fast and power full car against the 170 hp. You just have to see how it launch on tarmac all the way to the higher gears, it is flying. We all know the engine and the transmission if they designed together, can and does over come a hughe HP deficits vs more powerful engines with a so- so transmissions.
\nSo i think the R2 package is a very good combo. You get a good power with a good suspension and good weight. Which makes the car being very quick.
    \n
\nIf you combined that with a very taleted driver like Chris, it is not suprising the Fiesta R2 can and does performs better in stages then many AWD Turbo charged car.( who remembers the WRC when the Citroen kit cars did run faster then a AWD turbo WRC cars ? LOL )
\nI am sure many heavy AWD Turbo car has a not much power advantige over it, if you think about the weight /power ratio. Plus the proper world class suspension and the added proper transmission.
\nSo what i am saying is , many people get hooked up on the 170 hp spec. That is part of the package where (i dont think so) the Fiesta is "left behind" , but any other segments you looking at it , it is a weapon. And sound- looks ,very nice also.
    \n
    \n
\nI am a fan of the R2 package , i dont think you need anything better for a FWD class today in the USA.

\r\nThe 170hp is plenty, but still lacking a bit for the more open US rally events. However, it is limited by the 1.6L engine and homologated parts/internals not really to "round off the package". If they build the 1.6 like they do the 2.0L for S2000, the motor would be making ~225hp at the crank, but also cost $20,000.
    \r\n
\r\nI don\'t think you need the 270 at the wheels like DVW, but the general rule of ~200whp is the sweet spot for a 2WD car matched with a proper gearset that will get you just over 100mph in 5th. And that\'s what I\'m shooting for in my Civic over the summer which is pretty easy on all OEM honda parts when I freshen it up combined with the already fantastic gearset I have in the car.\r\n

\r\nThere are quite a few Fiesta\'s running that could make it happen...

    \r\n
\r\nThey all seem to be in for the full National run this year, so that would make 3 more than last year, but only Chris D and Fast Eddy\'s cars are actual R2\'s.
    \r\n
\r\nIf you count the 1 in Canada then we have 3 R2\'s, but he hasnt entered any of the RA series events thus far this season...\r\n

Well DVW\'s car isn\'t legal with the turbo and 6 speed sequential dogbox, also brakes are out of spec and most likely lots of other bits.
    \r\n
\r\nVerena and Your car, while not full built R2, could be classed as an R2 for rules purpose because you do not go outside any R2 rules even though you\'re both built to MS1/R1 specs.
    \r\n
\r\nReally, they should just make it open to all Fiestas to make it easier instead of going through and chasing rule infractions to try and invalidate people. you might even find something on Chris or Eds car that you could find R2 illegal but isn\'t game breaking. I can tell you already that Ed\'s car is mixing a USDM shell with Euro front end body panels I\'m not sure if that breaks some FIA homologation rule?\r\n

    \r\n Hi guys,
    \n
\nI know I am bringing this one back from the grave but I read thru this about four years ago and then just reread it a few minutes ago. One of the factors that folks rbought up was the initial cost of the shell and how the car might make more sense once shells start showing up for sub $5k.
    \n
\nWell, they are definitely sub $5k these days and I am curious given the current experience of those with a fiesta over the past few years, the attractive British pound level (1.22 today vs. 1.55 back in 2011/2012...this is about a 20% cheaper) and the traditional 2wd cars getting older and more scarce, are those cases people making for this being the "new GTI" still intact? Are they more so? Thanks in advance for your comments and shared experience.\r\n

\r\n I can build a better G2/open2wd car for less, even with running Fiestas being less than $5k now.
    \n
\nPersonally, I feel that there is no better value than a 92-00 hatchback civic. Double wishbone means no expensive struts, so proper rally suspension is dirt cheap, plentiful aftermarket, and now you can get a fully configured sequential ready for install for $8kusd.
    \n
\nYou could build a better Honda Civic hatch to "r2 spec" for under $30k, and it would do everything better (I think) than a Fiesta R2. I don\'t think there is any crazy contingency offered anymore, so I don\'t see the point in running a Fiesta R2.\r\n

\r\n M-Sport\'s R2 kit for the fiesta, not to mention the development behind it, is a whole lot more than nice struts and a sequential. I\'d hope that M-Sport\'s reputation at making a damn good rally machine isn\'t in doubt. But like Adam points out, it\'s not cheap and you don\'t have to go that route to get a really well prepared 2wd car for North American Rally.
    \n
\nMy personal opinion/observation is that the fiesta chassis is well suited to the sport and has lots of good options out there for everything including and beyond motor, gearbox, and suspension... it doesn\'t have to be all or even partially from M-Sport. Seems pretty easy to get parts these days too. Do get Team O\'Neil\'s latest skid plates and mounts though, better than M-Sport\'s and anything else I\'ve seen for those cars - great piece of kit.
    \n
\nNot dissing Hondas or double wishbone suspension. Or Toyotas. Or BMWs. Or Volvos. Or VWs (of course). Or any of the other good choices out there for 2wd rally. Just try not to do something that barely anyone else out there has done or is doing... there is almost certainly a good reason for it not being a popular choice.\r\n

I am with you. I think a fiesta with some of the select components could make for a strong G2 car with modern electrics and reliability along with good Team O/ M-Sport bits easy to source. I have a fiesta as my current daily that I am thinking about taking the path down with....thanks guys!\r\n

So... don\'t get a Fiesta then? Hardly a "popular" choice, except for those who\'ve decided to spend $80+k on them
    \r\n
\r\nOr a Golf... about 5 of those competing in Canada.
    \r\n
\r\nIf anything, there are more Honda\'s and Focus competing in Quebec than any other 2wd cars in Canada. So I agree, run what is commonly run. Which isn\'t golfs, fiestas, bmws, merkurs, or anything else. Civics and focuses are super common, but focuses are like golfs... not really any redeeming qualities that lend them to rally besides support from 30 years ago in Europe.\r\n

\r\n Sorry if I\'ve triggered you Adam, I\'m not here to argue.
