Hi,

I have 0 experience in working crew at a rally. I know basic mechanic ideas about fixing my own car (volvo 240DL) but I really want to learn. I have tried to do the "aprentice" thing at the car shops, but I have too little experience for them to consider me, and sadly enough of all my friends I know the most about cars. I have been doing some reading on auto maitenence, so I will know one end of of a socket wrench from another, but I would really like to get some hands on experience. I am located in Atlanta, and plan to make my way out to Cherokee for the rally there. If I can help anyone with anything just drop me a line. As you can tell I am really motivated to learn.

Dear James

I may be able to help but I need to get some things togetter before I can let you know. My dad has a shop in atl with two Ptg cars that we run and we are always working on them. I will get back to you later as soon as I can.

Hey, nothing in thge world will force you to learn like pushing yourself to build a car, presuming of course you really want to learn.

You have a good car to start on, go cruise some pawn shops and get your self a toolbox and some stands and some hammers (It _is_ a Volvo after all you will have to beat it!)
Find wrecking yard s where they let you pull the stuff yourself and this is the most important thing if you want to learn:
Set a goal.
Use a PEN and write a rough outline of the Goal and set dates using PENCIL so you can revise your target dates but will be aware when you do that you are revising, builds some honesty there.
Go help the folks with the PGT cars, but set to work on your own.

Remember, a well sorted gravel car is about the coolest handling/ride compromise you'll find, the power in a rally motor is nice and flexible so no problems with street driving, everything you do to a 240 to make it a cool gravel car make it a cool and fun street/road car.
Get going, welcome to the asylum.
Got any questions about modding the Volvo, it's all been done and there are helpful folks over on Car Construction some of whom have direct pipeline back to active Volvo rally guys in the old counrty, as a matter of fact, I gotta stop and order a 3" exhaust system for a 240 Turbo and a V40 Turbo 3" system right now!
