I have worked as service crew at LSPR last year and at Cherokee Trails this year and what I'd like to know is what type of radio communication you have with your drivers? I am considering business band or possibly looking into Ham radio. I need some help here guys and would like some opinions from crews to help me make a decision before STPR.

We talked one of our service crew into a ham license and into joining RACES.

See I had this whole thing figured out, and the old FORT didn't even bother to talk to his own son. All we need is two cans and some string... a whoooooooooole LOT of string.

That way you can be found if you slide off the road. And you can find your way home too. :+

Sure . . . encourage the boy!
(although it might make it easier to find a car hiding in the trees!)

The range isn't the best in the world, but this item has potential...
? NOAA Emergency Management radio with 14-channel FRS
? Monitors U.S. Emergency All Hazards and EAS weather bulletins, warnings and forecasts
? Audible and visual alert when activated with 100 decibel alarm
? 3 levels of warning: statement, watch, warning
? Digital PLL Tuning for all 7 NOAA channels
? S.A.M.E. reception feature allows you to select broadcasts for 6 specific counties
? Clock with time display
? 8 minute snooze and crescendo alarm
? Earphone jack and microphone included
? 38 CTCSS privacy codes
? 3 levels of NOAA messages: statements, watches and warnings
? Batteries: 4-AAA
actual size: 2.25x1x6.25

You may not be able to talk to each other, but at least it'll wake you up after a nap, or when the weather is going to hell...

Just in case anyone cares . . . on May 11, 2002 I took the
element 2 test for Technicians License and passed. Now have
my call sign (KC2JRU) and should be on the air at STPR.
Thanks to All who responed and helped me make this decision.
(especially Charlie KA8OQF)

Why not use nextel's? or some other cell phone, Verizon should have the coverage for the woods, my nextel worked in Atlanta fine.

Crew folks at STPR with radios: Should we assign a simplex frequency to talk between ourselves? I suggest 147.570 (because it's programmed into all my radios.)
CQ rally crew...CQ rally crew..DE N0NUN.
If Charlie's working service radio, he might have some thoughts about this.

Bruce, I'll look for you there (simplex/147.570) unless I hear
otherwise. Will have both portable & mobile available to me there!
