I've been overpaying! My crew always gets a free spot to sleep on the floor and all the Fritos they can eat, too!

Hey, this isn't fair. The system only lets me vote for Labatts once.
I voted 12 times, so far, but only one vote for Labatts Blue gets counted.

Hey, there were only six answer slots available, and I wasted three of them on the Team Evil crew beer (LaBatts), and the reference to Blue Velvet. These important beer questions require at least 20 answer slots in the poll!

Well, I've only crewed once (at the recent 100AW) for Phil and Dallas Smith. I did it to learn something and to have an adventure weekend, so I was not expecting any sort of compensation. The fine selection of microbrews (I opted for the Anchor Liberty...one of my favorite IPAs) that Phil provided was really swell, but the Rhybudd team shirt that Dallas presented me with will be treasured forever (or until it no-longer survives the laundry, which ever comes first...)! That was so cool. Someday, when I have need of a crew, all volunteers will definitely get team shirts (plus the option of Bridgeport IPA, Guinness, or Dr. Pepper). It really made me feel part of the team, even if my most important job was fetching Phil's dinner at the evening service.

When I first started crewing for racing teams I was a poor college student, so the deal that I asked for was room and board. "Feed me and give me a place to sleep, (on the floor was fine) and I'll work my butt off for you!" I didn't drink at the time, so beer wasn't much of an inducment to bloody my knuckles and burn my forearms.

The first couple of teams I worked for in Rally gave me the same deal, too.

When it became Brenda and I, Brenda codriving and me crewing, the deal changed and we paid for our own food and a share of the room.

Along the same lines, as a co-driver/crew couple, there is one driver who asks that the codriver pays the entry fee, and then each time one or both of us goes and works on the car between rallies, there is a $25 credit against the entry fee, and $100 credit for crewing at the rally. Of course room and food are divied separately.

As a crew, try and judge what the team is going to be comfortable affording.

As an owner, consider the value of having someone there, how much you can afford and whether making a crew pay for something might mean that they end not being able to crew.

I don?t want to beat a dead horse but I am about to run my first rally, and wanted to know how to help my crew or compensate them. I have been around rallying all my life and worked and crew before but it was for my dad and a good friends so I never asked for anything. This time I will be driving and have a crew that wants to help out but I don?t know how to help them. We will be running in Paris Texas and are from Atlanta Ga. I have looked at ideas but am on low budget as I am a college student and have no job right now. I have looked at ideas like T shits or food and or helping with there hotel rooms. I also have to look at gas getting there. Two cars with a crew of 6 + co-driver and me all college students. On my budget I don?t think I can do all of the above to help them so any ideas, and is it ok to do some of them and then ask them to help pay for the their room and gas to get there.

Thanks for the help

Consider yourself lucky if on a college student's income you can afford to rally at all, let alone have a crew of six. I pay for my crew's ( including my co-driver who comes all the way from Puerto Rico) airline tickets to and from the event, hotel accomodations (usually a room per 2 crewmembers), all the food and drinks they can handle(usually steaks and beer), team shirts, event shirts, snacks, etc, etc. So as you can see, it is not cheap. Therefore, if anyone out there wants to crew for me for beer, floor space, cold sandwiches and you pay your own transportation, PLEEEASE call me?!! My wallet could sure use the break.

On a college students budget (unless Dad has left you a big trust fund <G>) tell every one that they have to share and share alike on the costs. And also tell them that anyone who gets to go also gets their name on the car. Hope to see you at Paris.

I am more than willing to pay the $3.25 per pitcher on Tuesdays at Moe's and Joe's in Atlanta.

I'll be there on the 25th.

Whether it is roadracing or rallying, I feed and house the crew. I can't always afford the top places to stay, but if I am the entrant then I pay for food and lodging. With rallying, my Co and I split entries and split the crew costs. We don't expect our crew to pay for anything except souvineers or anything personal they want. At an event we usually have plenty of quick-fixin sandwich stuff, lunchables, and plenty of gatoraid/water. We have always had at least ONE sit-down steak dinner at each event and I make sure my boys and girls know that we could not operate without them. I live in a college town with a very active university-sports-car-club, so my crew is usually young and happy to be going. I am very thankful for that!

I generally do this:

-try to arrange getting the crew to the rally free, that is, ride with
me or other rallyists from the area
-pay for their room, but usually get one room for crew. If I have more than two, they share.
-Sometimes I give $20 straight to each crew member for every actual day of racing. I figure this will let them buy any food they want. Sometimes I just buy all their food those days.
-lunch/snacks available in the van
-I do provide embroidered team shirts to wear, but I can't afford to give them away every event. :(

Sometimes I am very lucky and my family helps out, and they are a little cheaper. :)
