So I went with a buddy yesterday to pick up his new 2wd Ural.... Yes, 2 wheel drive, side car and bike!!

And, no sooner I was thinking "wow one could rally one of these", the owner of the place sees my jacket (sporting Toltec Rally Team) and starts sharing his sorties of rallying in Russia.

So I ask him, "anyone rally a Ural before. He laughs and says not in the US....yet....

I think a motorcycle sidecar class in rally could be pretty freakin' cool. Just add an intercom and rally computer. Tarmac would be a bit sketchy but snow and gravel would be a hoot.

BTW: in central america rally is done on quads quite a bit, a la Dakar

Those guys are absolutely freaking crazy (but they say the same thing about us......)

I had a discussion with the Swedish guys at the top of the hill, and posed on their bike - then I looked where the monkey had worn holes in his leathers.........

ymmv

A guy has already bugged Anders to death and its not going to happen anytime soon.
I guess it was an insurance issue, just like always.

press on,

My father did a bit of side car action in post WWII Germany, he said all the best side car guys had no or partial thumbs from laying out. Being a master mechanic/machinest he was partial to his.

One small problem on rallying with an Ural, to get it running over 50 youŽd have t drop in from an MI-8......:D

LOL, funny but not quite true :). My Ural will go all day at 50 no problem, even 55 no problem, BUT 65 is another story :(, feels like something will fall off. Accelaration would be the big problem, no issue for street riding but for rally, don't think so.

Now if someone swapped in a BMW motor (not too hard) and the tranny holds together, totally a different story :) .

The whole Ural was copied/stolen from the WW2 vintage BMW sidecars

It is not a 100% copy but very very very close. The Russians added the 2WD capability to it. Manny people find an old URAL and swap in an older BMW motor and presto instant speed.

The whole Ural was copied/stolen from the WW2 vintage BMW sidecarsactually bmw built their plant in soviet union before the wwll and the bike just kept on being developed from then on independently
2dw version was created for army needs
