In the US are Marshals rewarded/paid to help out on events and if so in what way?

In the UK Marshals are not paid and not every event can afford to given a gift to their Marshals so the majority do it for the love of the sport rather than a lunch box, baseball cap or other gift.

Is it the same in the states?

Same for the most part. A lot of events will have some business sponsor the "schwag" for the marshals. Some will occasionally have a price to raffle off (again, sponsored usually). But most people who volunteer for events never get anything for it save some free T-shirts.

When we are competing, we like to bring a couple bottles of locally produced wine, one for the competitors and one for a worker. Of course since we put on the Rallye de Paris (in the 2nd largest Paris in the world :) ) and the wine is from Paris, that is advertising for us.

The chief of controls (or similar title) from Rally GB has been to the 100AW a couple times and he always says we give away a lot more stuff to workers than they do. Mostly, that's due to the fact they have 4-5 times more workers than we do. The US National events usually do some combo of t-shirts, hats, pens, flashlights, stickers, pins, posters, or magnets. But mostly they come because they like to and have fun.
