Looks like we won't be able to run due to a schedule conflict with work. Gotta pay the bills and all. But I'll be available to navigate. If I don't get a ride I can come out and work stages.

stock suspension would work just fine on the main road. it's flat and smooth. the spur road is a bit bumpier but stock stuff would still handle it ok

We ran NT1 this year on OEM suspension (which are KYB GR2's). After the race, Derek said, "that was the smoothest gravel road I've ever driven."
You'll be fine.

Didn' Matt Johnston just post he's got a new engine in his. car? Jim Cox, I know you're laying on the wrenches this weekend, get her back together and come play with us.

waitaminute? i could have sworn it was only 2 stages. are all the NT rallys 2 or 3 stages?
if they are 3 that is an even better deal than 2. that is only 41 dollars a stage if you enter and pay early.

It would appear the Potlatch road is being used. I would assume stage 1 east to the Potlatch road, stage 2 Potlatch road to the usual turn around and then stage 3 will be the westbound route back the start of stage 1.

the # of stages doesn't really matter, it's the mileage that matters. With the 3 stage configuration it is still fairly similar in length to the 2 stage configuration (still two coefficient 1 rallies)

gotchya. either way the NT rallies are a pretty good deal.
i really like the idea of having three stages even if it is the same length as 2 would be. it is almost like having acess to split times on a longer stage so you know where to pick up (or slow) the pace.

I find Chad to be patronizingly haughty. I could say something about his brand preference of volatile flammable liquid hydrocarbon mixture used in his internal combustion engine, but it is not gentlemanly for me to divulge it, since even construction wokers and refuse collection staff would find it repugnant and obscene.

I resent the insinuation that there is something amiss in the size of my hydrocarbon chains. I am almost tempted to mention how his peculiarly unpalatable visage has been found so offensive that RA is considering implementing a full-face helmet requirement in the Historic class.
markhuebbe
06-17-2010, 07:41 AM
Chad is a very respectable man, but he has no taste, lacks ingenuity, and has a family ancestry populated with persons judged to be medically deranged. Which I suppose confirms his liking of dwarfish, portly women whose resemblance to hideously disfigured farm animals is more than passing, and have the acute mental vision of segmented invertebrates living in my garden soil. ;)

Chad, May an outrageous number of gargantuan Scottish co-drivers seek refuge in your hatch-back, all the while coming to terms with their sexuality with your spill kit and fire extinguisher, while you attempt to pass technical inspection this Saturday afternoon!
P.Johansen
06-17-2010, 11:45 AM
While I find the Floccinaucinihilipilification of Chad's hydrocarbon chains to be right out proper, I would be woefully hesitant to offer any criticism, whatsoever, when one's vehicle of choice has a fuel dispensation system devised well before humans discovered the world 'twas round, as well as front suspension retrofitted from a epicurean era hand-cart. :D

trash talk i got nothing. topor wins, chad and I have the exact same times and then the rest of you slowpokes fill out the rear :D
the real story is whose co-driver barfs first? we've got 858's standage coming off a gravity barfing, we've got round dan who has never co-driven before and then we've got utecht. dave is too old to barf, he has no gastric system, it's all dust
oh yea we're thinking of a team challenge. each co-driver gets an etch-a-sketch and an object to draw. Driver has to go smooth enough not to erase their progress. FTC judges each drawing on a 0 to 5 scale. Cumulative high score for NT2a and b wins

What Brent didn't know was that when he was typing that, I was putting out the fire that started in the rear bumper. The car had stalled and when I was trying to restart it, there was a mini flamethrower at the tailpipe heating up the bumper cover. About then, the officer walked up to the window and told me I might want to stop doing that. Thanks to quick action, experience putting out fires and ability to smooth talk most law enforcement I was able to get the fire stopped and got off without the tickets I deserved for no seat belts (the belts are adjusted for Brent), no proof of insurance, no driver's license in my possesion and blocking traffic.
When we got the car back to the house, I happened to find the temp sensor wire had fallen off after 20 minutes of other diag work. After reconnecting the wire, we are back to running well.
That's all the news that's fit to print. See you all tomorrow.

Yea, that was a close call! Glad you guys avoided "the big one" all day and could keep competing!
We had a series of uhh... less than optimal situations as well.
1. Running the spur on stock suspension, sans skid plate = disaster. Even driving between 20-30 MPH, swerving around rocks and holes we managed to blow both rear shocks and rip several chunks off our transmission housing.
2. During one of the stages, the dust and sunlight created a near impossible visibility, we carried too much speed over a crest, steering got light and landed kinda funny, which knocked our line off. When there was a brief hole in the dust cloud we discovered we were trying our hardest to turn left on a sweeping right... ditches have excellent stopping power :D
3. For some reason our fuel consumption was astronomically higher than in NT1. Our fuel light came on in SS5, by the final 1/3rd of SS6 it was sputtering around every turn. We took it easy and cruised to the finish in 6th gear. I am really amazed we made it back to MTC.
"fun" stuff.

is it common for it to get that rough? or did the recent rain make it worse?

it's pretty much always that rough - the first time through it was very wet though which made it worse. I'll have video up sometime tonight or tomorrow. my car on the rs&sp's, fairly fresh soft R203's and the dccd had a big advantage on that road for 2A - that's where I made my time. The spur road can be brutal. Last year navigating for Amy in car 0, I had my belts less than 100% tight due to the anti-submarine strap placement being, um, "not optimal" Amy was driving at "I have to drive this thing home" conservative speeds, but I was still banging my helmet on the roof pretty much non-stop.
I've driven that road with the Sentra with the AGX and it was less than fun . . .

There are quite a few corners on the spur road. And it's so much different than the main road I'd hate to see it be taken out of the future rallies. All it really needs is to be graded in spots. Being narrow and tight is fine.

Good work!
so i just started taking my car apart with one of my crew guys... turns out the spur road was so rough that it bent the rear mounting points for the strut tophats in the car and separated the seam a good 1/2". guess it's time to pull the rear windscreen and hammer those back down, do some seam welding and make some reinforcement plates
ok so waste management is probably the real culprit by the spur road didn't help any!

No problem..
Just happy you were able to continue on :)
yea we were really just stuck, no functional damage - right side down in the sluff, left side up in the air. If Dave was a lot fatter he could have maybe got the left rear corner down (jumping up and down on it he almost got it to hook up fully - it was starting to grab traction pretty good). Getting creative with the scissor jack might have done it too. Still a fun time, I just need to remember that corner for next time - I think I had problems with it going both directions

Getting creative with the scissor jack might have done it too. Still a fun time, I just need to remember that corner for next time - I think I had problems with it going both directions
lulz....I wish Jerry got that on camera. I was actually jumping with all my force on top of the trunk of the car. While jumping up and down I was wondering what the hell was going to happen IF we actually got traction.....I was preparing to leap from the car :D
I cannot believe there are no dents in the trunk lid.
You didn't have trouble with that corner on the way down...:)

not that you're aware of ;) I do remember having a worried feeling on it the first time through because I had way more angle in it than the previous corners

I found your on-screen cornering force indicators to be distracting, if a bit entertaining.

it was worse this time because we didn't plug the intercom in (terriblephone stopped working) so it was really swinging around. I plan to mount the peltor replacement somewhere less obnoxious

Yeah, put it somewhere one of you can reach easily when belted in too. I just about dislocated my shoulder trying to adjust the Peltor in Amy's Legacy at LSPR.
Torn between ordering a FMT120 right now or waiting to see the results of Lurch's experiment with the Yaesu FTM-10R (Ham radio with an intercom, for not a lot more than just the FMT120). Will probably do the Peltor for simplicity sake and the dual volume controls anyhow.
that's why I liked having the terriblephone mounted up at the top of the cage, it was easy to get to the volume controls and the cords hung down where they were quick to grab. I'm going with the fmt120 and I think I'll put it somewhere lower just to keep the cords away from the camera

Is that the top of the strut tower you can see flexing like mad after the hood comes up?

What you see is the large capture washer going up and down while the bushing for the top of the strut compresses and releases.
