Looking at getting a Stilo helmet but I want to use the R3 restraint system. If I get a helmet with the HANS posts installed, can I put the D-Ring from the R3 system directly into the same holes where the HANS posts were or do I still have to drill???

Reason I would be going to get the R3 system is because safedrives is offering a rent to own program. I dont want to fork out 2k for myself and girl friend to race one rally and then decide its not for us.

Any help would be great.

I am pretty sure the posts/holes are in very different spots... SafeDrives has a PDF mounting instruction sheet for the D-ring mounting - see link below

No, I asked charles this once...he said you can get the D-ring adapters from HANS for the R3.

something like this I think: (but confirm with charles before shelling out the $40)

I talked to Charles today and he said he did not know either way???

I guess I would feel bad drilling into a 800 dollar helmet as opposed to a 100 dollar helmet. Should I really care either way?

yes but if Charles does not know then personally I would rather not have extra holes in my helmet - buy a G-force helmet for $150, drill it for the R3 D-rings, run it a few times and if you hate the R3 you can probably sell the G-Force helmet used for $100 if you take care of it and call it a cheap test....

just my personal cheap a$$ opinion... and I know cheap!

Sounds like a plan.

I have seen instructions and comments in various places saying that the hole positioning between an R3's D-Rings and a HANS' posts are not significant and you can use the same holes. For one event, that would be the best option in my opinion. For legal/liability reasons, I doubt you will find anything from either manufacturer or a reseller that states that though.

Another option is to get the HANS quick release kit (link was posted above) and use the HANS posts and the HANS tether that attaches to the helmet. The R3 then connects to that using it's clips (which were the same quick release clips as what HANS uses if I recall correctly). You'll may need to adjust the length of the R3 tethers to account for the extra piece in there. Not sure how tech inspectors are going to feel about that approach though, so you'd want to check first. All the pieces being used are SFI or FIA approved, but not necessarily in that combination, so someone could balk at it.

You could also reach out to Davenport Racing and see if they are still doing their HANS rental program or not. I rented 2 HANS devices from Doug for NEFR 2008 for about the same pricing as the R3 rentals from Safe Drives.

Tim

p.s. rereading the original post, if you don't have helmets already, going for a cheaper helmet option like the G-Forces and drilling specifically for the R3 if that is the device you choose to try out is obviously a good option. Just factor in the intercom costs when considering what the long term $$$ outlay is going to be if you decide you like it and buy Stilo or Peltor helmets with built in intercoms.

Um, if you are really not sure about this - how about borrowing everything for Paris (seriously)?

press on,

Why not just borrow a HANS for your first event?

Don't know anyone off hand that would let me borrow 2 hans devices. Even if someone were to help, I do not think I would take them up on that offer. A lot of things can go wrong and I do not want to lose or mess up anyone's equipment.

I answered this when you called sir but apparently I was not clear. For that I am sorry. I will post the information for everyone. =)

You CAN use the HANS helmet mounting points / holes that are predrilled into many commonly used rally helmets for use with R3/Hybrid/Hybrid PRO mounting hardware. You will have to buy the D Ring Kit for those devices ($24.99) and mount that D Ring Kit in the predrilled mounting points. You may have to remove HANS specific parts and replace them with the D Ring Kit for the R3/Hybrid/Hybrid PRO. As always follow the manufacturers instructions for adjusting the helmet tether lengths / slack.

If you strictly look at the manufactures install guides you find that the mounting point for R3 versus HANS are slightly different. The R3 mounting points make for shorter helmet tether length. However as posted above, simply lengthening the R3 helmet tethers allow you to use the HANS specific mount point on the helmet.

So, a HANS helmet IS OK TO USE WITH R3 or HYBRID.

Please let me know if there are any other questions. I have been using the R3 / Hybrid products in my own rally car as a driver for the last 3 years.
