View Full Version : Which Hans model?

Folks,
It's time for me to take the plunge - which Hans model are folks running for rally applications? I'm sure there's a mix of 20 and 30s out there, but not sure what MOST people find MOST comfortable.
Keep in mind that I'm uh, a bit overweight right now (225lbs) and the note on Susquehanna's site shows that people over 200lbs may find the model 30 more comfortable. So, own up. Who's using what. And if you can post car/seat type that would be even better.
I'm most interested in Subie folks with Sparco Evo2 seats, but all applications welcomed.
Thanks!

I'm 215 lbs, 6'1", using a model 20, size medium, or whatever HANS says fits nearly everyone.
The angle of the wings is the difference between the two (the adjustable bit is what makes some other manufacturers products nice, but I digress). So you'd need to find someone with a similar build as yourself if you really wanted to compare.

Model 20, Impreza (1st gen), Sparco Eco II seats. I'm 175 lbs. My son, same seats, model 20, don't know what he weighs but he's probably close to you.

I've got a HANS Sport model M20. I'm 6'0" and around 190 lbs (though most of my excess pudge is around my gut, not up on my chest). I've find it comfortable in a range of various cars and seats from an OMP in an STi to an Evo II (I think) in an RX-7.

I have a model 20. I am 6'3" 260 lbs. Used it for years in various cars, but currently have an Impreza with a Racetech seat. Fit has never been an issue.

The generally available one is the 20. I was considering getting a 30 because I try to recline in the seat as much as possible, but I could never find a 30 in my neck size to demo (and I wasn't going to pay that much money to buy something without trying it on). Then I stopped competing and the issue became moot.

All good info - thanks guys! I was debating about the 20 vs. 30 clearly, and was concerned about positioning. I borrowed a Hans from the cage builder so we could put in the rear harness bar at the right height so I know that the fit is right from the vertical positioning, but the angular positioning of the specific Hans model was the question.
Looks like I'll lean towards the 20.
Thanks guys!

I'm a big guy and run a 30. There is no way I could run a 20. I tried.
My current co-d is maybe 230# and runs a 30. He tried a 20 and bought the 30.
My father is 6-foot and 190# and wore my 30 once, and it cleared just fine and looked comfortable.

I'm 6'0 230lbs, broad shoulders, and wear (and have used) a 20m with no issues.

The difference between the 20 and the 30 (and the 40) is how reclined or upright the seating position is. I don't see where the size of the person comes into play. However, the HANS web site says that some larger drivers find the 30 more comfortable. I don't understand, but that is what HANS says.

Out of interest, in what way did the 20 not work for you?

Actually, I can now see how a 20 might not work on bigger guys. The most obvious potential is if your chest does not straight down (e.g., if you have a bit of a belly), the lower portion of the HANS device will tend to stick into our chest. A 30 will stick out a little more and give you a little more breathing room.

It essentially only contacted me at the tips of the yokes, and at the top of the hans as it pressed into the seat. It was not even possible for me to crank down the belts and be uncomfortable. Simply a no-go.
With the 30, it rests fully against my chest and does not contact the seat.

I had the same problem with wearing a model 20 in 2006, I could pass my hand between the yoke and my chest with the belts tight...very uncomfortable. Lost some weight, and now the yoke of the exact same device fits flat against my chest.

I'm 6" 230Lbs use an Evo2. I've had a Sport 20 and haven't had an issue with it and I carry most of my weight in the torso, but I could totally see how people with more of a barrel chest then I could have issues. I've also worn it in two different MOMOs and a different Sparce (forget which one) without issue.

I only did it to make J.B. look worse when he's standing next to me.
