View Full Version : Manufacturer Instructions for installing HANS anchors to a Peltor helmet?

Hi!
Can someone here provide me with "manufacturer instructions" for installing HANS anchors (posts) on a Peltor Pro Rally (G7) helmet? I read through the RA and NASA rules and they both state that retrofitting a helmet with HANS anchors is legal as long as it was done according to manufacturer instructions.
Also, is there a shop in the Washington/Oregon area that can do this work?
Thanks in advance!

They should come with the HANS posts, mine did.
But this raises an interesting point...
Recently I lent a Peltor helmet and HANS with sliding tethers to a friend to run at 100AW. The posts were installed VERY carefully on this helmet by me according to the HANS instructions. I have another newer Peltor helmet that came with holes pre-drilled for H & NR posts. Both helmets and HANS have been inspected at NRS, RA and RNY events.
When I got the helmet back from my friend, the HANS had been temporarily adjusted by opening one the the tether slots, folding the tether and screwing back the tether slot to lock down the tether. My friend said this was done under instruction from scrutineering, they claiming that the tethers were too long.
When we use the helmets in our car one of the tests we always do, after getting well strapped down, is to extend our head as far forward as possible. We always manage to reach the end of the tether and are restrained by the HANS. Having seen some of the video of neck extensions during rapid deceleration I know the human neck extends much further under adverse conditions. So it seems that if I can be restrained by the HANS by manually extending my head then it should serve me well in a frontal impact.
Article 5.1 of RA rules state...
A. All drivers and co-drivers competing in Rally America performance rally
events must wear helmets that meet one of the following standards:
1. Snell SA2000 or newer
2. British Standards: BS 6658-85 type A/FR, including all amendments
3. SFI Foundation, Inc.: SFI Foundation, Inc.: SFI Spec 31.1 Rev. A or
31.2 Rev. A
4. FIA 8860-2004
B. Helmets that do not pass scrutineering will be confiscated and returned
after the event. Helmets can be failed by scrutineering for not meeting
any of the standards in Article 5.1.A or for not being in good condition as
apparent by cracks, frays, punctures, or other defects.
C. It is recommended that helmets be replaced every five years.
D. SFI 38.1 licensed, or FIA 8858-2002 approved head and neck restraint
systems are required for all Rally America events. These systems shall
be mounted per the manufacturer's recommendations and shall not
violate the single latch requirement of the occupant restraint system.
E. Competitors assume the risk of any modifications to their helmets and
are encouraged to always follow the recommendations of the
manufacturer. Refer to Article 5.1.B. above.
I challenge the scrutineer's action in this case. The rule states the systems should be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions yet they are requiring field modifications to pass tech?
Something's wrong.

Thanks for the info, Simon. For some reason I thought the manufacturer in question was Peltor, not HANS. Switching to Decaf coffee has been a disaster!

Mike-
Don't know about a shop in your area.
I did my own on my first helmet using directions from HANS:

Measure 5 times before drilling !!!

The other thing to point out is that although under static conditions it may appear that the tethers are too loose i.e. just sitting comfortably in the car, you can almost touch your chin on your chest before the tethers become tight, I believe under dynamic conditions things behave differently and the tethers will become taught sooner when the torso moves forward.
HANS has specific guidelines for the length of the tethers in the Quick Start Guide available here:

WOW!! that scrutineering team better have had a REALLY good idea what is going on..Making or recommended those changes. That would have put them at a pretty big liability in the event of an incident.

As well you should.
Someone needs to speak with them. Have you had a chance to take the issue up with someone above them?

Since I wasn't a principal in this incident I can only report what I know. My friend was eager to get through tech, I wasn't there. I would certainly stand my ground if the situation occurred to me.

I know - I'm feeling bad about not coming this year. Having decided to run TON and the Mad March Rally this year we had to cut back somewhere and RNY took the hit.
Have fun everyone and be safe. I'll be following along online.
