It's made of very light plastic material, weather proof, almost indestructible, 8.5x11, thick enough that doesn't easily bend like paper. I carry one taped to the inside roof of the rally car for easy reach. It's mandated by British MSA and must actually be presented at scrutenering in UK events.
I have found myself getting out of a rolled rally car at night and having absolutely no idea where the route book with the OK/RedCross has ended up..(could be in the forest or the ditch next to the car, under the seat, on the driver's lap, who knows..), or having the OK page under the rain/wind and seeing it destroy it in your hands as the minutes go by...

Mark Williams at his co-driver course said that when your in a car with HID's, you can't see the OK or Red cross...
I have the back of a routebook with 3m red reflective vinyl over the cross and its all laminated... (yay for abusing office supplies!) ... Velcro it to the inside of the roof above the co-driver...

That's a good idea. Then you don't have to spend money on one, just use an old routebook you have laying around.
$0 safety is the best kind.

I bought a bunch of red retroflective tape for Wild West to use on the red crosses in the route book. Then, we had crazy weather and lost the roads the week before the rally and ran all of the stages at a single venue each day, during the day. So, we never got to really try the idea out.
As far as bright driving light washing out the red cross symbol, ask Kim DeMotte about STPR '06 and that bad-looking off that the Sprongls had. I couldn't make out what was on that page he was holding up.

some years ago, I got a hard-shell OK/Red Cross sign -- 2 sheets of A4 size sheet plastic with large lettering, sheets held together with bungies so it's like a sandwich board readable from both sides. sign is secured next to codriver's seat, it's super quick to deploy, much easier to find after an off than routebook...like Alex sez, you often have no idea where the routebook has actually ended up.
works a lot better on top of rally car in the rain/snow/sleet/wind than paper routebook (pls don't ask how I learnt this  ) the hard plastic sheets just pop over the radio antenna so sign doesn't blow off, etc
this particular sign has been tested in Quebec snowbanks, Maine puckerbrush, STPR woods (2x ), Ontario frozen mud and probly a couple other places I'd rather forget.

I think this is really important too. When we rolled in Colorado 2005, the roadbook ended up 200m from the car.

Well, if it is really important that the competitor put out the correct sign, then the OK/Red Cross sign should be attached to the driver/co-driver.
I have been in three significant rollovers where I (as co-driver) had to exit through the driver door. In each of those, I did not carry the route book out with me (different reasons each time) and, for safety reasons, I was not inclined to climb back into the car to get anything out.
