This series is showing on OLN in Canada right now. It is about a 3 rider team in last years Dakar rally. Interesting to see the commitment required to run a team in this event and compare it to how the privateers cope day after day. Anyone who complains about the difference betwen that haves and have nots should see this show.

The less well funded riders have a box for all their equipment, tents and personal items. That's it, no mechanics, no service trucks, nothing. The well funded teams will have a service lorry or two, one or two chase trucks and mechanics to repair what ever breaks.

When ever I see complaint about the cost of rallying and the difference between the haves and the have not, I can now laugh. Watch this show to see how the have nots really have to struggle. Their desire to compete and finsh is incredible and not a complaint among them

If you go to Flatovercrest.com you can read about the show and Charlie Boorman. We interviewed Charlie Boorman and Russ Malkin in Toronto late this Fall. You can also download a podcast of the interview!

For your information, the book "Road to Dakar", is out in hard cover now. The soft cover edition (at $20.00 cheaper) will be out in June 2007. Just reading "Long Way Round" by Boorman and Ewan McGregor (the actor) presently. Good book. Boorman is quite a character!

I quite enjoyed Boorman's "personality" in the Long Way Around, but I found him a more than a bit whiney in Race to Dakar. It seems to me that the Dakar is all about personal grit, and he seemed to not really want to be there.

It was really cool, however, to see a "back of the pack" story, and more of the behind the scenes stuff that you don't usually get in the Versus coverage.

Hopefully teaming up with Ewen McGregor again for the Long Way Down (Scotland to Cape Town) will make for better TV.
