View Full Version : Anybody have junk 15" tires around?
I want to build a set of bolt tires for ice racing to put on some rally wheels, and want to use rally tires for the stiff sidewalls they've got to support the tire when it won't hold air.
I'm looking for something in 195/65/15 or so - tread doesn't matter since i'll be running on bolts.

Jay,
If you can't find any in close proximity, I have some old Michelin rally tires with no tread on them: (5) FB81 15/62/15 size I think. You can have them for the cost of shipping; I need to get them out of my shed.
I'd turn them into ice racing tires, but there's not a lot of... um... ice around here.

Use the lowest profile worn out high performance street tires that you can find.
If you build them correctly, they will hold air just fine. Here's how to do it.
Drill the holes,
put a dab of windshield adhesive on the hole, run the bolt (use hex heads-easier to tighten) and washer through the hole, put a washer and lock nut on the other side and tighten it up. Repeat hundreds of times. Mount them up and put a can of Slime in each one. I run 50 psi in mine and they lost about 10 psi over 4 months last year.
Sharpen them up with a snowmobile stud sharpener, and you're ready to go.
I made a set out of Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's w/approx 175 bolts in each tire using the above method. Takes about 4 hours per tire, but totally worth it.
I was thinking rally tires due to teh stiff sidewall. hi po tires would work too.
I'm considering going the cheapie route, a friend has a set of re92's that are 195/55/15 he'll give me, and I can do drywall screws through from the inside, slime the tire, and away I go.
He's just built bolt tires for about $.29/bolt (144/tire) and much more time than it'll take to do screws. I work at a place that can likely get me cheaper prices on hardware, so it may be cheaper but it'd definitely be fun.
Mike where are you located?

click on the little icon-head-thingy, I'm in Redondo Beach (Los Angeles), CA. I have a stack wrapper/palletizer that would make shipping easy, but our shipping department is shutting down until January 2 when we come back to work. We get deals on UPS and Fedex, so it will be less than quoted on the web.
These tires would have come in handy for ice racing when I lived less than 10 blocks from Lake Winnebago

Jay,
I have a few laying around the house that you can have if you want them. They are michelin directional rallytires. I have at least 2. Where are you located? Maybe we could find a halfway point, or I could drop them somewhere for you.
Call me if you want

I'm located south of the cities.
I actually found a set of 195/55/15 old re92's that should work pretty darn well for what I'm looking to do. I figure about 400 screws per tire.
