Mitsubishi leads Manufacturers Championship with Convincing Win at Perce-Neige

The 47th running of Rallye Perce-Neige, the first round of the 2012 Canadian Rally Championship, was won by Antoine L’Estage of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec and co-driver Nathalie Richard of Halifax, in their new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

Reigning Canadian and North American champion, L’Estage becomes the all-time record winner at Perce-Neige with a fifth win. L’Estage and Richard clinched best time in seven of the first ten stages and motored to an outright 8-minute victory in a demanding event that saw only 18 of the 42 cars reach the finish. The Production Sport class was won by defending champion Yavor Klostranec with Emily Dowell in the co-driver seat in their two-wheel drive Mitsubishi Lancer.

Two other teams of the Mitsubishi Brigade were among the finishers. Synchro Racing saw Simon Losier partnered with veteran co-driver Brian Maxwell in his EVO VIII clinch a rewarding fifth place. Alvin Fong and Billy Machin of Danbury, Connecticut were second among the novice crews in their new Lancer Evolution IX.

Rocky Mountain Rally preview

The next Canadian Rally Championship stop for the teams will be in Calgary, Alberta in the last week of May. The challenging Rocky Mountain event is always unpredictable, as roads can be dry and windy as well as snowy and slippery, which makes it a real challenge. “It’s a convincing victory, winning the rally with a gap of over eight minutes ahead of second place,” confides Antoine L’Estage, who adds, “I felt much more comfortable with the new car than last weekend in Michigan. Nathalie once again did a fantastic job co-driving, we didn’t have a single mechanical issue, and our Yokohama tires allowed us to push as much as we needed to throughout this very long rally. We can really say that it was the perfect scenario for us.”

Road conditions were incredibly challenging as slippery ice covered most of the stages. The team took a slow and steady approach with the goal of bringing the car across the finish line in one piece. A very consistent drive by Carl and spot on calls by Dave all weekend yielded successful results (although the rally was not without its moments – nearly every stage had a spin or missed corner). The service crew led by Matt Alexander and comprised of Martin Asao, Mike Rhode, and Jesse Lang did not face any difficult repairs and kept the car running smoothly for the entire rally.

The next event for ZRT will be 100 Acre Wood at the end of February in Salem, MO. The team has unfinished business at 100AW as they have broken down on the same stage two years in a row.

Sno*Drift is the season opener of the RallyAmerica National Championship series, and is held in Montmorency County, Michigan, USA, and it featured no fewer than 67 entries form all parts of the world. Studded tires are prohibited at Sno*Drift Rally, and the difficult conditions tested the drivers as the stages had a mixture of snow, sand, gravel and lots of glare ice. “Our recce notes were crucial this year,” said Chris. “It was very important to note the areas that had thawed and turned to gravel. It was equally important to note the icy areas and slow down appropriately.” Chris and Phil stayed mostly clean on Day 1, recording only one puncture near the end of Stage 5. Their fast but cautious approach kept them in a 4-way battle for second place at the end of Day 1, and they handily took their first Group 2 Regional class win of the year.

Overnight snow covered some of the exposed gravel on Day 2, but the team suffered a setback on the first leg of Day 2, after a minor run-in with a snow bank broke a CV shaft. “It was entirely my fault,” said Chris. “I bumped a snow bank that had some gravel and dirt in it, and even though we were going slow, we broke the left CV joint in two. That was on Stage 15, and it meant that we had to run Stages 16 and 17 with only one-wheel-drive. It took us 4 minutes to climb the first hill on SS16. In fact, we needed help from some marshals and fans to push the car up the icy slope. One little mistake from me was all it took to end our bout for a National podium finish.” After the crew quickly repaired the damage at service, Chris and Phil then went out to battle back for some Regional points. They pressed hard and once again displayed their perseverance as they came from behind to take yet another Regional Group 2 win, although they could only muster a fifth place finish in 2WD National. The Weasel RallySport team finished the event with a double Group 2 Regional win and Chris is now the Central Region Group 2 points leader.

The team will be back in action at Rally in the 100 Acre Wood in Salem, Missouri, USA in February. Top ten overall for Cline at the season opener

Cline Racing Sports, of Evan Cline and Grzegorz Dorman representing the Exedy Rally Team, opened their 2012 Rally America National Championship Series with a 10th overall and 5th in Super Production class at the Sno*Drift Rally. The race was based around Atlanta, MI and presented the team with some of the toughest conditions to overcome on more than 120 competitive stage miles of the event.

Cline’s freshly upgraded 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STI ran the event flawlessly despite hitting snow banks and a few spins on the ice-covered race stages. The Michigan crew, based in Brighton, drove conservatively on Friday stages, ending the day 12th overall and 5th in their class. These roads were raced mostly at night and were the toughest conditions to race on. Lack of snow and higher than usual temperatures in the area left a thick sheet of ice on the roads, which was polished with every car racing on them.

Saturday’s stages welcomed drivers with a thin layer of fresh snow that came down overnight, which improved conditions on the roads and confidence back in Cline Racing Sports crew, seeing them in the top 10 stage times in eight of the twelve stages.

Evan Cline, CRS driver: “I am happy we brought the car to the finish, which was the objective of the weekend, but am a little disappointed couldn’t show the potential of our upgraded car. It ran great and the times we achieved on Saturday were pretty good, with a few top five overall. 100 Acre Wood Rally is just few weeks away and I am eager to see how we do there.”

Grzegorz Dorman, CRS co-driver: “This was the most difficult event I’ve ever been to by far. Not only were the roads were really slick, but there was no snow banks to help slow you down if needed. Was a stressful event because we wanted to make sure we made it to the finish, but also wanted to flex the new car a little. I look forward to the second round of the season in Missouri.”

The next event for Exedy Rally Team, will be the 100 Acre Wood Rally based in Salem, MO on February 24th and 25th.

First Round of the 2012 Canadian Rally Championship

The 47th Edition of the Rallye Perce-Neige, the first round of the 2012 Canadian Rally Championship, will be held this weekend out of Maniwaki, Quebec, capital of the Upper Gatineau region. The Mitsubishi Brigade will be comprised of 7 teams among the 41 starters. Reigning Canadian and North American champions and 2011 Perce-Neige winners, Antoine L’Estage of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec and co-driver Nathalie Richard of Halifax, Nova Scotia, will contest the event with a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. L’Estage and Richard are coming off of a strong second place finish last week in Michigan at the first event in the Rally America series. Defending Production Sport class champion Jeffrey Dowell and Yavor Klostranec will team up in their stock Lancer on the slippery logging roads.

Five more teams will be entering open-class EVO rally cars; some of which will be looking to finish in the Top 5. Synchro Racing will back the Losier family including Simon in his EVO VIII, partnered with veteran Brian Maxwell, and Martin steering his EVO V with Patrick Losier. Regular championship fixtures Ian Crerar and Doug Draper are also back in action in a new Lancer EVO IX.

Rounding out the Brigade will be Michelle Laframboise, the only female driver contesting the event, with returning co-driver Dean Hopkins in their EVO 4. In addition, the Mitsubishi Brigade welcomes the Connecticut-based novice crew of Alvin Fong and Billy Machin aboard another EVO IX.

“Winter events are always unpredictable because of the nature of roads. But our crews have done extremely well in the past at this event, taking victories in six of the last eleven rounds”, mentioned Mr. Kenji Toh, VP Sales/Marketing & Corporate Planning for Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada. “These teams are starting a fresh new season and we wish them the best and hope they do as well as last year.”

Rallye Perce-Neige: profile

First round of the season, the 47th running of the Rallye Perce-Neige will start Saturday morning in downtown Maniwaki at 9:00 am with teams heading for a 14-hour ice and snow fest on back roads. They will tackle more than 500 kilometers encompassing 16 speed sections for a total of 244 kilometres, making it the longest and most challenging round of the year. Friday, competitors will travel the stage roads at low speed to record pace notes before a charity fundraiser shakedown takes place in the evening. Defending 2011 Rally America National Champion David Higgins launched his 2012 title defense with Subaru Rally Team USA by achieving a decisive victory this past weekend at the Sno*Drift Rally. Higgins, driving a 5-door 2012 Subaru WRX STI rally car, dominated the rally leading from the start and winning 15 of the event’s 24 competitive stages. Higgins finished nearly two minutes clear of his closest rival. The Sno*Drift Rally was not easy by any respect; David’s biggest challenge was keeping his STI on the event’s treacherously icy roads. Higgins proclaimed the variable and slick road conditions as the toughest rallying he has ever encountered.

The Sno*Drift Rally, round one of the six-event 2012 Rally America National Championship, challenged nearly 70 top rally teams with over 130 miles of snow and ice-covered roads in northern Michigan. Constant changes in weather and road conditions coupled with several stages run in total darkness make this rally notoriously challenging. Drivers will attest that the biggest challenge of the rally is that spiked or studded tires are not allowed, making traction extremely elusive when conditions are icy. Drivers this year were greeted with exactly that; a recent thaw and subsequent freeze turned many of the stage roads into sheets of smooth ice.

Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew were up for the challenge from the onset and all but sealed their victory with a commanding performance on the first loop of stages where Higgins posted several blisteringly fast stage times while his rivals struggled with the icy conditions. After winning the opening four stages, Higgins had amassed a nearly two-minute lead on his rivals before the first service halt. However, maintaining that lead on the treacherously ice-covered roads was one of the biggest challenges the veteran rally pro Higgins has ever tackled.

“The icy roads combined with lack of spiked tires makes this one of the toughest rallies and a challenge I think that is unique in rallying anywhere in the world,” explained Higgins. “Mentally it’s very draining, as you are constantly on the edge all weekend with the knowledge that any small mistake could just end the rally. The grip levels would go from variable to non-existent in a flash.”

The lead Higgins had amassed on the opening day of competition was only briefly under threat for the first loop of stages on the morning of day-two. Higgins, running on ice tires, encountered fresh snow on the stages allowing his chief rival Antoine L’Estage, who had chosen a snow tire, to claw back some time. After switching to snow tires at the first service, Higgins responded to the threat and won five straight stages to regain nearly all of the time lost in the morning while sealing his victory.

“This was a great victory and a strong result to start our title defense,” explained Higgins. “Our Subaru was perfect all weekend and allowed Craig [Drew] and I to just concentrate on the job under these wild conditions.”

Added James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc., “David and Craig drove prudently to a tremendous result, and Subaru Rally Team USA prepared a car in our 2012 Subaru WRX STI that has proven to be the class of the field this weekend. Having to constantly assess traction levels under such difficult road conditions within the context of competition driving rapidly takes a mental toll, and our #75 driver pairing truly rose to the occasion and ultimately prevailed.”

The podium result was hard-won after the team lay in fifth place overall after the first night of competition: “Honestly, on Friday night, I was questioning whether we could turn the race around” said Comrie-Picard, “but between some smart setup changes on the team’s part and a bit of a reset in my driving style, we managed to turn the tables on our competition on Saturday and go from over a minute out of second place to a solid result and a kickoff to our championship. I’m as proud of this result as of any in more than ten years of rally driving.”

The Scion team is competing for the overall two-wheel-drive Rally America Championship in 2012, and is very happy with the finish this weekend. Said Gordon Ting, team principal: “This is a solid result and a terrific points haul. We know from last year that we have what it takes to win on gravel, and we’re looking forward to the 100 Acre Wood Rally in late February to prove it!”

The conditions were treacherous, with a combination of water on ice, glare ice, and a dusting of snow over ice. Said co-driver Jeremy Wimpey: “Imagine your worst nightmare of an icy road surface, then drive it through the woods on a one-lane road at 90mph. It was that sort of weekend…”

BFGoodrich Winter Slalom KSI tires provided the traction for the team. Said Comrie-Picard: “Nothing should be able to grip the glare ice we were on; it’s a testament to the tires that we stayed on the road at all. The Winter Slalom’s compounding and tread pattern gave us the advantage we needed.”

The team shared the podium with Ford Fiestas in first (Chris Duplessis) and third (Dillon Van Way) places. It marks the sixth time in seven Rally America appearances that the Scion xD has been on the podium. The team plans to contest the entire Rally America Championship.

“We may not have won but the outcome of this first rally in 2012 is still pretty positive. On one hand, the new car had no mechanical issues and doesn’t have a scratch on it and on the other hand, we earned second place points in what are promising to be hotly contested championships (North American and Rally America),” confides Antoine L’Estage, who adds, “the 2012 edition of the SnoDrift Rally was without a doubt the toughest driving conditions I’ve ever been faced with. The icy roads were comparable to an extremely smooth ice rink and it was practically impossible to find any grip. The first loop of stages was especially tough for me before I was able to better adapt to the new car on ice. I also made a mistake by cutting a corner where I shouldn’t have, resulting in a flat tire and another big loss of time,” adds the Rockstar Energy Drink driver.

After having conceded a big gap during the first day, L’Estage and Richard essentially tied the eventual winners on the second day, finishing the competition in second place. “Congrats to our British rivals David Higgins and Craig Drew – they had an excellent weekend,” adds Antoine L’Estage, who concludes, “thanks to Nathalie for another perfect co-driving job, to my entire Rockstar team, and to our sponsors, which now also includes Formica for the 2012 season.”

On the heel of their return from Michigan, the members of the Rockstar Energy Drink team will be faced with another winter challenge this weekend as they contest the Rallye Perce-Neige, in Maniwaki, Quebec. This event will be the first round of the Canadian Rally Championship. “We’re looking forward to a nice winter rally, with nice winter conditions!” exclaims Antoine L’Estage. “The roads in and around Maniwaki are hopefully covered in snow and the route that we follow for the Rallye Perce-Neige is fantastic. We’re eager to cross the start line on Saturday morning to kick-off the defence of our 2011 titles,” chimes in Nathalie Richard.

The Rockstar Energy Drink team will again be using the Yokohama line of tires for 2012, this weekend it will consist of A034s for the snow and IG20s for icy conditions. “Tires are a key element when we’re aiming for the victory at this rally,” explains the Quebec driver, who has already won this event four times making him one of three drivers in the history of the Rallye Perce-Neige with such a successful record since its inception almost half a century ago. The start of the 47th edition of the Rallye Perce-Neige will take place on Saturday morning at 9am in Maniwaki. The finish is scheduled for approximately 10:30pm after the teams have covered more than 500 km.

This was the first time David had ever competed in the ice and snow. With over 60 cars competing in the event and a high rate of finishers, it was a very competitive event. The weather made it very difficult all weekend with below freezing temperatures, ice, and on the last day several inches of snow.

“I am so happy with our results this weekend, especially for our partners AlphaSTAR, Genoa 5, and MCQ Composites. Our new Subaru was just finished and I drove it for the first time this week” stated David. “Having never rallied on the ice or snow I wasn’t totally sure what to expect. Turns out you can’t expect anything because the heavy ice and snow this weekend made the conditions very difficult to plan for. I know we will be even quicker next year though because we learned a lot of valuable information that will really help.”

The team’s crew chief, Don Jankowski, who himself has had class wins at Sno*Drift rally in the past, did an amazing job building the new rally car in such a short amount of time. The car was completed Tuesday night with testing the following morning. With very little sleep and the tenacity to press on regardless he and Ken Nowak made sure the car was ready in time.

“If you look at all that we have overcome; finishing our brand new Subaru the night before testing, David never had rallied in the ice or snow, and this being his first National Rally America event I feel that the entire team did an outstanding job” explained Karen. Don and Ken building such a great car, all the tremendous help we received right before the event from Pete Gladysz, the beautiful new car wrap Zach Thompson of Competition Graphics provided us, and awesome our crew of Andrea Nowak and Brett Duncan. Rallying is all about teamwork and we are so fortunate to have a great team. David drove consistently fast all weekend!”
